TREATMENT:
Although glasses might help in
the initial stages, surgery is the ultimate mode of treatment.
The principle of surgery is to
remove the opaque lens. Before the invention of Intraocular
lens (IOLs), Cataract operation involved only the removal
of cataract. After surgery the patients were made to wear
thick glasses. These patients cannot have useful vision
without glasses. With glasses also, because of the high
power of the glasses, they all see enlarged and ghost images.
Implantation of intra-ocular Lenses (IOLs) solves these
problems.
IOLs are made up of inert and
non-toxic substances like acrylic, silicon etc., Usually
they do not produce any allergic or toxic reaction in human
body.
When do you treat cataract?
When cataract interferes with
the patients routine activities like reading, writing,
watching Television, Driving etc., the patient can undergo
surgery.
After Cataract:
After cataract surgery with
implantation of IOL, a very few patients might develop blurring
of vision due to thickening of posterior capsule which serves
as a support to the IOL. This can be treated very easily
by an Ophthalmologist by application of YAG Laser is a matter
of seconds and the patients can see well again immediately.
